Mermaid Spotlight: Mermaid Jules

How did you get your start?
Living in South Florida, I've been surrounded by water my whole life. Locals practically learn to swim before they walk, so maybe I was destined to be a mer! I discovered the art of mermaiding in college and decided that I would put the scholarship money I saved towards buying a full-silicone tail. I've always been into the arts, both creating and performing, and with my love of the water, I knew this would be a perfect outlet to get creative and have some fun! With a bachelor's in Advertising and minors in Business and Entrepreneurship, I did my research and discovered that it could be both a hobby and a sustainable venture. So, when I graduated college, I purchased my Finfolk Productions tail as a graduation gift to myself, and my life was forever transformed!
What did your first tail look like?
My first tail was a purple fabric tail by Magic Tail. I still use it for mermaid yoga since its so light-weight. My first silicone tail came months later, after doing a lot of research on tail-makers and pouring my heart into a design for my dream tail. A Mermaid's tail is like a signature, so I wanted to design something bright, bubbly, and fun to match my personality and my SoFlo lifestyle. I came up with a bright pink tail with lavender tips and magical white speckles!
What's your favorite thing to do on land?
On land, I am your average 20-something year old: I work from home with my pomeranian, I practice yoga with my fiance, I brunch hard with my sister, and travel often with friends. My favorite thing to do is create! I am constantly scribbling ideas down in a notebook, either new costume piece designs, photoshoot concepts, makeup looks I want to create, etc!
What is your favorite spot to dive and do your mermaid thing?
I love to travel and swim as many places as I can with my tail. Some unique places my tail has been include a cruise ship pool, mermaid tanks at festivals, and in a classic car in Cuba, among other springs and oceans. My favorite spot so far has been Sombrero Reef in the Keys because of the beautiful fans, fish, and corals.
What's your favorite underwater animal?
This is a tough one, and I'm not sure I can pick a favorite, but I do love to see all the local life. Turtles and rays swim so peacefully, eels slither with unique colors & spotting, and colorful salt water fish are always a beautiful sight to see! I have not yet encountered an octopus or a dolphin while swimming in the wild, so those are on my bucket list!
What's your favorite thing about being a mermaid?
Mermaiding has brought so many amazing opportunities into my life. Since getting a mermaid tail, I have collaborated with many other brands and artists, including television producers, fashion designers, singers, photographers, artists, & other mermaid performers from across the country and around the world! I love creating art, and when you find other like-minded creatives, you can really make some magic!
Is conservation important to you?
Yes, definitely! We only have one Earth- we need to take care of it! I usually take an extra trash bag to the beach with me to pick up garbage in the area. My motto is, if you have time to collect seashells- you have time to collect trash.
How can we (your mermaid friends) help the ocean, our home?
You don't have to wait for an organized beach clean-up to save our seas. Get involved by doing your own 2-minute beach clean-up on every beach visit!
